JACK’S SPRATS!
Paultons are proud to introduce Jack, a baby Humboldt Penguin, who will soon be big enough
to join the other penguins in the pool at Paultons. His parents, Lunch and Markie, laid two
eggs, however, as they had not successfully reared chicks before, one egg was removed and
put into incubation and Jack was subsequently hatched weighing just 70gms.
Hand-reared by the Livestock staff, his initial diet of liquidised fish and minerals was regularly
fed to him by syringe but now at two months old he has progressed to eating between 20 and
25 whole sprats three times a day and currently weighs in at a very healthy 2665gms!
Jack’s parents also successfully hatched their egg and in a few weeks time, when his feathers
are fully waterproof and he is confident in water, Jack will be joining his brother and the other
penguins in the pool at Paultons.
With twice daily keeper talks, the collection of Humboldt Penguins at Paultons are part of over
50 attractions at the Park which opens daily at 10am until Monday 29th October 2007.
