PR07/07 - April 2007
TWO'S COMPANY!
Spring has arrived and the wallabies at Paultons Park are contentedly nurturing their
new youngsters who were born around two months ago. However, some are better at
parenting than others and one little joey needed to be fostered when his mother lost all
interest in rearing him. Luckily for him he had become pals with another joey whose
mum seemed quite happy to give him a home and the twosome are now sharing her comfortable pouch.
Geoff Masson, Livestock Manager explains, "It is very unusual for a female wallaby to
adopt another joey. They normally give birth to a single young and resent any others
going anywhere near their pouch; however for some unknown reason this mother
decided that it was okay for the pair to share her accommodation! At the moment all seems to be going well, however there may be a few problems due to lack of space as
the joeys get bigger!"
Wallabies are born after a gestation period of a month and the single newborn climbs
into the mother's pouch and attaches itself to a teat. It remains in the pouch for four to
six months and weans after ten months.
Red-Necked Wallabies are part of over 50 attractions at Paultons and can be seen at
the Park which opens 10am daily until 29th October.
