TIGHT SQUEEZE FOR FLAMINGOS!
The eight Greater Flamingos at Paultons Park are on the move! They are being taken to join
an existing group of the same species at Marwell, as Livestock Manager, Geoff Masson
explains, "When we originally received the Greater Flamingos they were described as being all
female, however last year they produced an egg and hatched a healthy chick, so it was
decided they would be better as part of a breeding programme and were offered to Marwell
Zoological Park".
However, the tricky problem was transporting the birds, as flamingos have a delicate bone
structure, especially their legs. The answer – ladies tights! These were carefully put over the
birds' bodies and they were then gently placed in straw-lined boxes to keep them secure during
the short journey to their new home, the whole operation being successfully completed in less
than an hour!
"Tights proved to be the perfect solution and when they were removed only one pair was
laddered!" said Geoff, who oversaw the whole operation, together with two keepers from
Marwell Zoo. Paultons still retains its collection of Chilean Flamingos, which can be seen at
the Park that opens daily at 10am until Monday 29th October 2007.
