A WEIGH DAY AT PAULTONS

The Keepers at Paultons have been kept extra busy recently.  Every bird and animal at the Park has undergone a complete physical check-up; quite a task when you consider the number of different species at Paultons.  

As part of the health check it was decided to weigh the Park's three Aldabra Giant Tortoises for the second time since their arrival in 1995.  As Geoff Masson, Livestock Manager, explains, "The problem is there aren't many places that have scales large enough for the job – it takes three people to lift one tortoise!  So we will be taking them to be weighed at James' Farm in nearby Winsor, where they have large butcher's scales usually used for weighing carcasses!"

The Aldabra Giant Tortoises at Paultons were bred in captivity in the Philippines and are mere youngsters at around 25 years old, but the species are renowned for living to great ages and originate from the Aldabra Atoll islands in the Seychelles.

The tortoise collection is just one of over 50 attractions at Paultons Park and can be seen when the Park opens to the public for half term week on Sunday 18th February.
