PRETTY FLAMINGO!
MANFRED MAKES A SURPRISE APPEARANCE AT PAULTONS
The appearance of little Manfred was quite a surprise to the Livestock staff at the Family Theme Park.
Paultons had acquired eight Greater Flamingos from another collection and these had all been listed as being female, although physically some of them did appear to be male. The birds were put in with a group of Chilean Flamingos and two eggs were laid last year and two more earlier this year, but these all proved to be infertile.
Livestock Manager, Geoff Masson said "When the birds started nesting this season we didn't expect anything to happen but, lo and behold, little Manfred was hatched!" Since then another pair of Greater Flamingos have nested and eggs have been laid and, not to be outdone, the Chilean Flamingos have also laid eggs, one of which hatched on 23rd August!
Flamingos build raised mud nests on which eggs are usually laid and are birds native to southern Europe, Africa, south western Asia, southern USA, central and South America.
Paultons Park is open every day from 10am with further information from www.paultonspark.co.uk.
