Fountain of Life
T wo spectacular new fountains have been
installed on Paultons Park Lake to provide much needed oxygen
to the fish during the summer months.
“Water levels in the River Cadnam, which
feeds the lake, are lower in the summer
which means that the oxygen levels in
the lake also fall thus endangering the fish” explains
Geoff Masson, Paultons Livestock Manager. “The two new aeration
pumps we have placed in the lake throw
the water over two metres into the air meaning that sufficient oxygen
levels are maintained”.
The 10-acre, horseshoe-shaped, lake
is home to Common Carp, Roach, Tench,
Perch and shoal fish. The lake is an important
conservation area providing a natural
habitat for birds such as Swallows,
Housemartins, Kingfishers and Herons, insects like
the Dragonfly and Mayfly and occasionally
water mammals such as Otters.
Geoff said, “There are many waterfowl living on
the lake including Great Crested Grebes and Black Swans
and, although they were unsure at first,
they all seem to have become used to the new fountains
very quickly”.
The two aeration pumps are left running
24 hours a day and have metal cages
attached to prevent the fish entering the intakes.
