World Parrot Day at Paultons Park
P aultons Park is pleased to be supporting
World Parrot Day on Monday May 31st
2004. The Park will open its newly refurbished function room,
The Oak Room, for visitors to
see several Parrots including a Yellow
Crowned Amazon Parrot. Visitors will also be able to learn more
about the work of the
World Parrot Trust (the body organising
the event) and the plight of parrots across the world.
Geoff Masson,
Paultons Livestock Manager
said, “Many people do not realise that some parrots are close
to extinction or have actually become
extinct. ‘Spix’s
Macaw’ became extinct as recently as 2001. The aim of the
day is to raise awareness of the difficulties
faced by these beautiful birds and to
make people realise it is not too late to save many
of the endangered species”
There will be a CD Rom presentation
in the Oak Room for visitors to view
in addition to free literature so that they
may learn more about the work of the
World Parrot Trust. The World Parrot Trust works across the
globe helping to ensure the survival
of parrots in the wild and the welfare
of captive birds everywhere.
Paultons has 9 different species
of Parrots including “Bacon”, the Medium Sulphur-Crested
Cockatoo, who has been at the Park since it opened
in 1983. There are over 150 different
species of exotic and unusual birds at Paultons.
World Parrot Day is a nationwide event
organised by the World Parrot Trust
aimed at raising awareness of the threats to
all parrots, captive and wild. The
official World Parrot Trust website has further information
about the organisation and World Parrot
Day at www.worldparrottrust.org.
