Jumping Jacks!
O ne of
the new arrivals at Paultons Park is Jack the Red-Necked Wallaby.
The joey, named after one of the
new drop rides at the Park, Jumping
Jack, is one of five baby Red-Necked Wallabies born 5 months ago.
“
The joeys are only about two and a half
centimetres long when born and so are
only visible above the pouch after about five or six months” says
Geoff Masson, Paultons Livestock Manager. “During its time
in the pouch it will increase in size by about 2000 times when
compared to its size at birth”
Although Jack is growing up
fast it seems he will remain in his
mother’s pouch a little
while longer yet as Geoff explains, “ The joey will remain
in the pouch for around 280 days. Even
when they begin to venture out from the
pouch to graze they are still extremely nervous
and will dive, head-first, back in if at
all distressed”
Despite much of their natural habitat
being destroyed, Red-Necked Wallabies
are not considered to be a threatened
species and inhabits Tasmania, South
East Australia and even have a small
colony on the hills of the Derbyshire
Peak District!
The Red-Necked Wallabies
and their joeys can be seen at Paultons
Park, open every day from 10.00am.
