MEET PAULEAT THE PELICAN
 Paultons Park and Longleat Safari Park are proud to introduce their latest joint breeding
success, Pauleat the Pelican.
Back in 2008, Paultons Park’s collection of Pink Backed Pelicans consisted of all females
whilst the collection at nearby Longleat Safari Park had some spare males. So Keepers at
both Parks got together and decided to collaborate.
As pelicans are not regularly bred in captivity in the UK, a joint breeding programme was
started, with Longleat sending three male birds to Paultons. In that first year several eggs
were laid but only one hatched and unfortunately the chick died.
However, last year was more successful. A number of eggs were laid and Pauleat was
hatched at Paultons on 22nd November 2009. Taken to Longleat as a one day old chick,
Pauleat was hand reared by Mark Tye, Head of Section and Sarah Keefe, Warden.
Returned to Paultons on 23rd December, Pauleat continued to thrive under the care of Geoff
Masson, Livestock Manager. The healthy chick is now almost fully grown and quite a
handful, with a 30cm long beak and a wingspan of 2.4 metres!
Young Pauleat will go on show with the other Pelicans at the Park in the next few weeks,
once the weather improves.
The bird collection forms part of over 50 rides and attractions at Paultons Park, which opens
for February half term on Sunday 14th February 2010.
